Let's Stay Healthy! Protect Yourself From Enterovirus D68 and Other Illnesses.  According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) infections have recently been documented across the United States. Many state health departments have reported increases this year in cases of severe respiratory illness in children; EV-D68 appears to be the predominant type of enterovirus this year and may be contributing to the increases in severe respiratory illnesses. Mild symptoms may include fever, runny nose, sneezing, cough, and body and muscle aches. Severe symptoms may include wheezing and difficulty breathing. Anyone with respiratory illness should contact their doctor if they are having difficulty breathing or if their symptoms are getting worse.  There are simple ways to limit exposure to D68, the flu and other viruses:

  • If you are sick, stay home.
  • Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze.
  • Wash your hands.

Talk to Your Child: You can use a graphic from the CDC to help you discuss these personal hygiene measures with your child. More info on EV-D68 from the CDC.

A Note From our School Nurses: In order to minimize risk to other, we encourage parents to keep your children home if they exhibit any flu symptoms, which include fever, body aches, chills, headache, cough, or vomiting.  We advise that you keep your children home from school until they are fever-free for a full 24 hours WITHOUT the use of any fever-reducing medications (such as Tylenol or Advil). While in school, we will be reminding everyone about the importance of preventative actions, such as frequent hand washing and covering their mouths when they cough or sneeze. The CDC also recommends the Flu Shot for anyone above the age of 6 months, and high-risk groups.
